英语雅异汉语重复间的竞争互斥与共生互容(2)
除此之外,英语还采用汉语中不存在的音变构词方法,如be-phySl。CS的[b]与[f]之间音变,same-similar的sam与sim之间音变,造出了紧密关联但词形、读音迥异的词汇。
2.造句
英语为了“雅异”,在造句过程中采取了许多手段。首先对词汇加以变形,为此,英语的实词都会有词形变化,如英语的动词形式有18种之多(汉语只有一种)。其次,制定了条目繁多的英语语法,比如英语限定动词形式与非限定动词形式必须交叉出现,第三人称单数主语要后接动词的三单式(如The girl swims well and she goes swimming every day)。汉语则以不变应万变,动词倾向于应用重复的形式:女孩擅长游泳。天天去游泳;又如在表达将来时的英语状语从句中,要用一般现在时代替将来时:If you do the iob successfully tomorrow,I will give you an award of$10,000;汉语却因动词只有一种形式,无需考虑这种雅异变化:如果明天你成功完成工作,我给你一万美元奖励。
此外,出于对“雅异”的追求,英语非常重视采用不同词、短语、从句、句式来表达同一意思,比如“因果关系”的表达就有20多种。请看对应“(因为)他取得很大成就,(所以)当选市长”的英语表达:
(1)词
He had made a great achievement:consequently,/therefore,/thus,accordingly,he was made the mayor of the city.
(2)短语
介词短语:Due to/owing to/thanks to/as a result of/because of his great achievement,he was made the mayor of the city.(He was made the mayor ofthe city due to/owing to/thanks to/as a result of/because of his great achievement.)
分词短语:Having made a great achievement,he was made the mayor of the city.
(3)状语从句
As/because/since/in that/nOW that he had made a great achievement,he was made the mayor of the city.rHe was made the mayor of the city,as/because/since/in that/now that he had made a great achievement)
He had made such a great/so great an achievement that he was made the mayor of the city
(4)句子
He made a great achievement,and/so he was made the mayor of the city.
He was made the mayor ofthe city,for he had made a great achievement.
3.谋篇
在同一语篇应用同(近、上)义词汇或词块、部分省略、替代词替换、句式句型变换等手段求雅是英语的基本要求,但在汉语中却常常选用同一表达方式,如:
(1)Ourdestiny offersnotthe cup ofdespair, but the chalice of opportunity.
我们的命运提供的不是绝望之杯,而是机会之杯。
(2)Courage in excess becomes foolhardiness,affection()weakness,and thrift()avarice.
勇气过了头变成蛮勇,情感过了头变成弱点,节俭过了头变成贪婪。
(3)His legs()crossed,Wang San was reading a book.
王三跷着二郎腿,看着书。
(4)——Did your son finish his homework?
——He said so.
——你儿子做了作业吗?
——他说做了。
根据标记理论,当相应的目的语形式为有标记时,学习者会迁移母语中的无标记形式。“雅异”在汉语中是无标记的,但在英语中是强标记,学习者就不可避免地迁移汉语中的“重复”形式,造成许多负迁移。于是,英语中许多与雅异相关的内容与英语学习者大脑中熟悉的“重复”模式相抗衡,变成他们的学习盲点,学习“费时低效”也因此在所难免。首先,由于对英语“雅异”的审美实效缺乏应有的了解,学习者学习英语词汇往往是极不情愿地死记硬背,抵触情绪常常导致词汇记得慢忘得却快。英语词汇因此成为许多学习者的“拦路虎”,甚至导致学习者放弃英语学习。其次是对英语语法学习缺乏兴趣,许多学习者对多变的英语语法厌烦至极,导致“语法教师抱怨学生学习语法的积极性不高,学生抱怨语法学习枯燥乏味不感兴趣。”而且语法学习常常生搬硬套,难以为英语交际打好必要的基础,英语本科生、硕士生毕业论文里许多语法错误就是需要重视的现实。
第三个不利影响是语篇产出乏善可陈,笔者已经对我国英语工作者作品中的不雅异现象进行分析,因此本文不再赘述,只提供最近英语本科生答辩过程中发现的诸多不雅异文本中的一小段(学生们往往用对应的汉语,理直气壮地陈述其表达的优美):“Ausnutria”itself carries rich implication.“A”stands for“Accountable”:“U”stands for“Utmost Execution”:“S”standsfor“Social Responsibility”:“N”stands for“Nonstop Innovation”:“U”stands for“Uncompromising to the mission”:“T”stands for“Team working”:“R”stands for“Respecting(customers,investors and our ownhuman resources)”;“I”stands for“Integrity”;“A”stands for“All for Infant Nutrition”.
